Vehicle burglaries and several property thefts have been reported in the past week in Summit County. Five vehicles were burglarized in Park Meadows on Saturday and several property thefts occurred in the basin on Wednesday.
Park City Police Captain Phil Kirk says he can’t really call the five auto burglaries break ins because none of the vehicles on Holiday Ranch Loop and Little Kate Roads were locked. A variety of items were missing from some of the vehicles. Kirk says Park City can get a rash of burglaries that usually are committed by people who are supporting a drug addiction. They’ll pawn items stolen from cars parked overnight in driveways or on the street. People make it easy for criminals when they leave valuables in their vehicles.
A woman parked her vehicle on Wednesday morning at the Silver Summit Trailhead for about 45 minutes. When she returned, she found her front passenger window was shattered and her purse and laptop were missing. The sheriff’s report shows that the suspect used the credit card at several places in Salt Lake City. Deputies spoke with the managers at the stores where the card was used and were able to determine that the suspect is a white male, wearing baggy shorts, a t-shirt and a hat. He was driving a white 4 door sedan. This case is still under investigation, pictures of the suspect/vehicle will be posted once they are received.
Summit County reported a garage theft on Aspen Drive in Summit Park on Wednesday when three bikes were stolen. The owner estimates the value is more than $22,000. The owners are not certain if the door was left open.
Another theft in the Summit Park neighborhood involved a house under construction. Tools valued at $1900 were taken Wednesday night. The sheriff’s log indicates the tools and the construction site were left unsecured.
Summit County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Andrew Wright says these thefts go in waves.
“It seems like every couple of weeks, we’re trying to remind our community not to leave valuables in areas that are not secure and in plain sight. I mean, that place that we had the vehicle burglary with that person at the trailhead, you know she left a purse and a laptop sitting in the front seat. And, they shattered the window and took the items. One of those things that we really want our community members to be smart about and work with us to help reduce their risk.”
Wright says don’t leave valuables where people can get to them easily. Close garage doors and lock up your things.
The Police report shows two incidents of possible hunting violations in city limits. One involved two people on horseback in the Claim Jumper area of Park City. They were reported to have firearms with them. The other incident involved a hiker in Deer Valley claiming that a Bow Hunter was camped in an area on Empire Pass. Park City ordinance does not allow the discharge of firearms, which includes bow and arrow, inside the city limits.
