US Ski & Snowboard In Midst Of Busy Season
US Ski & Snowboard saw action across the globe including local competitors in the Youth Olympics in Lausanne Switzerland.
The US National Women’s ski team raced in Austria over the weekend. Ski Racer Breezy Johnson finished 25th in the downhill. Johnson returned from a knee injury that had kept her out of races for 667 days. Alice Merryweather finished 23rd in the alpine combined while Mikaela Shiffrin did not finish her race after catching an edge. Shiffrin walked away without any injury. Meanwhile the men’s alpine team raced in Switzerland where local Ted Ligety led the team in the GS finishing 7th, Ryan Cochran-Siegle finished 18th. US Ski & Snowboard spokesperson Lara Carlton adds that younger US alpine racers were also in action at the 2020 Youth Winter Olympic Games.
“Team USA had six alpine athletes on the roster,” Carlton explained. “One of the most promising athletes on the team, Park City local, Lauren Macuga unfortunately DNF’d in the Super G. But the women's crew as strong, Colorado's Emma Resnick and Nicola Rountree-Williams both put down solid results and they ended up in the top 10. Emma was just outside the podium in fourth.”
Fellow Park City Alpine Ski Racer Zoe Michaels finished 25th in the Giant Slalom representing Australia. Five other local athletes continue their competition at the Youth Olympic Games through the 22nd.
Meanwhile the US National Cross-Country team raced in Germany competing in both a freestyle and team sprint.
“In the freestyle sprint Sophie Caldwell led all five Americans finishing 4th, Julia Kern was 15th,” Carlton said. “On the team sprint Sophie Caldwell and Julia Kern finished 5th and on the men's side Kevin Bolger and JC Schoonmaker finished 21st overall.”
The moguls team competed in US Selections this past week in Steamboat, Colorado.
“We had lots of podiums for the team athletes including Park City local Nick Page who took 2nd on Saturday and he solidified his start at the upcoming Deer Valley World Cup,” Carlton continued. “Kasey Hogg a skier for Wasatch Freestyle also earned a domestic start for World Cup at Deer Valley.”
Finally, Freeski team member Cody LaPlante finished third place in slopestyle in a competition in France. US Freeski Pro Team members Alex Hall, Colby Stevenson and Tucker Fitzsimons finished first through third in the Steel City Showdown a rail jam competition in Pennsylvania.
