Park City Chamber/Bureau CEO Retires After More Than 20 Years

Park City Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau CEO, Bill Malone, retired on Friday after 20 years in the position. His replacement, Jennifer Wesselhoff, starts this week.

Through the years, Malone said, there have been highs and lows in Park City. During his time in the position, Malone saw a recession and anxiety in the town when Vail Resorts bought Park City Mountain Resort.

“Like any community, I think this one especially, you know, kind of weathers those moves on,” Malone said. “We kind of forget what, what those issues were a couple of years ago.”

He said there’s been significant increase in business. And while some of that was driven by residential growth, he said the real growth came from the amount of second home owners in the area.

“As we kind of became known, the accessibility factor became more and more important in people's lives and we became a place that started attracting international guests, those opportunities grew,” he said.

He also said he’s seen visitation numbers increase.

“We were little over a million skier days in 2000,” he said. “We've surpassed 2 million skier days. So there's always been tremendous capacity that our mountains have.”

Malone was inducted into the Utah Tourism Hall of Fame last month. The Utah Office of Tourism noted his ability to adapt while still preserving the history of the community.

Malone said he’s considering some consulting opportunities in retirement, but you can definitely find him on the golf course more and enjoying the ski season.
