Sunday COVID-19 Update: 279 New Cases Statewide, Wasatch Back Sees Slight Increase In Cases


Sunday’s COVID-19 case count was more or less the same as last week, but cases in the Wasatch Back increased.


The Utah Department of Health announced 279 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, which is 2 fewer cases than the state saw at the same time last week. 

In the Wasatch Back, both Summit and Wasatch Counties saw an increase in cases week over week. Summit County reported five cases Sunday. Last week, Summit saw none. Wasatch County also reported five new cases, which more than twice as many as last Sunday, when the county saw two. 

There were 4,129 people tested for the first time statewide, with 7,204 total tests administered. On average just under 4% of “tests over tests” are coming back positive, while the average percent positivity for “people over people” is close to 7%.  

Utah’s Department of Health reported one new death. To date, 2,204 Utahns have died due to COVID-19, including 12 from Summit County and 21 from Wasatch County.

The department also reported 16 new hospitalizations. There are 137 people in the hospital for COVID-19 in the state. 

There were 8,364 people vaccinated for COVID-19 since Saturday, bringing the number 2,174,205 total doses administered. 

Summit County has administered 45,170 total vaccines and Wasatch has given out 22,629 doses. Both counties are registering to vaccinate residents 16 years or older.
