Park City mayoral candidate Nann Worel told KPCW Friday morning that she received a threatening letter earlier this year warning her to not run for office.
In a live mayoral candidate forum, Nann Worel, who is challenging incumbent Mayor Andy Beerman, said an anonymous letter was sent to her this spring.
Park City Police Chief Wade Carpenter confirmed to KPCW that the department is in possession of the letter and characterized its contents as “vague in nature,” but intimidating.
Worel told KPCW the letter was one of the factors in her decision to run.
“Probably what sent me over the edge was, and made me decide to run, I received an anonymous letter threatening me, telling me I would be harmed if I chose to run for mayor,” said Worel. “There were several other threats in that letter. As I thought about it, it made me more committed that someone would think that they could bully me into not running, or threatening me so that I would not run. That was the deciding factor for me.”
As of Friday, Carpenter said the case has not been referred to the state attorney general’s office for further investigation. He said he would do so if Worel receives any more letters.
Worel has been a city councilor since her election in 2015, and served as a member of the Park City Planning Commission for five years prior to her taking office.
Worel finished first by a wide margin in the August 10th mayoral primary, receiving 1,393 votes to Beerman’s 738. The third candidate in the primary, David Dobkin, received 367 votes and was eliminated from contention. Park City’s municipal election is November 2nd.
