The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Park City and Heber from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday.
“We've got an atmospheric river that's going to be plowing into the Beehive State, especially the northern half of the Beehive State, as we go throughout this weekend,” said ABC4 meteorologist Cedric Haynes.
There will likely be heavy mountain snow Saturday, Haynes said. Park City could see two to five inches of snow and Heber could see around one to three inches.
“It’s going to be a heavy, wet snow that's going to be coming down,” he said.
Haynes said the snow will turn to cold rain Saturday night into Sunday with total precipitation in the one- to two-inch range.
Utah Avalanche Center forecaster Greg Gagne said the storm will likely increase the avalanche danger in the backcountry this weekend.
The center bumped up the avalanche danger to moderate Friday due to an increase in winds, especially in upper elevations. Gagne said there will be fresh wind drifts on upper elevation slopes Saturday along with heavy, wet snow. With that in mind, the center is issuing an avalanche watch this weekend.
“If the weather forecast materializes, we'll likely be at a warning level Saturday or Sunday, where the danger could rise to considerable or even high,” Gagne said. “So human-triggered and natural avalanches could be possible by this weekend.”
Winter driving conditions are expected Saturday. The weather service advises travelers to slow down and use caution.
