Park City Fire District opens registration for wood chipping service

The Park City Fire District’s annual wood chipping service for area residents will begin later this month.

Park City Fire Marshall Mike Owens said wood chipping will start May 12, but registration is now available online.

“It’s more or less the same program that we were doing last year,” Owens said. “We are making a few changes to it. The result is that the chippers will be doing some other duties as well that we’re pretty excited about. We’re still getting those finished up, so a little bit more information to come on that later. But we are asking people – get your registrations in early."

The service runs from Monday through Thursday. The chipping crew follows a defined route through Park City Fire District boundaries (map).

“Once we start, we’re just doing continual laps and there will be pauses throughout the summer, and then we’ll get back to that chipping,” Owens said. “Most people use the program one or two times. There were a couple that used it four or five or six times. We may not be able to get all of their piles if they try to do that same sort of thing this year.”

Wood piles need to be clean and free of dirt, construction debris, or anything that would clog up the chipping machine. The pile sizes are limited to eight feet long by six feet tall by eight feet wide. Logs must also be less than six feet in length.

For those that want to use wood chips for landscaping or other means, the fire district keeps a pile in front of station 33 on West Bitner Road. People can take as many wood chips as they desire for free.

More details on the program, which is anticipated to run until September 25, are available online.
