The pedestrian tunnel under state Route 248, also known as Kearns Boulevard in Park City, was built in 2019.
While the tunnel has been operational for several years, the radiant heat snowmelt system was installed with deficiencies, according to the city engineer’s staff report.
A lawsuit between the city and the contractor over the faulty system is ongoing.
On May 22 the Park City Council approved two construction contracts worth nearly $1.5 million to replace the system.
Demolishing and replacing the existing stairs will be required so workers can increase the tunnel floor’s elevation, the report says.
There will be no access to the tunnel during construction, which is scheduled to begin the week after students leave for summer break. The last day of school is June 6.
A temporary, pedestrian-activated crosswalk signal will be in place while work is ongoing.
The contractor, Calvin L. Wadsworth Construction Company, anticipates that work will be “substantially complete” before students return in August.
Park City Municipal is a financial supporter of KPCW.
