Sheriff’s office spokesperson Skyler Talbot said deputies noticed the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia in the Walmart parking lot around 8 p.m. May 23.
It had been reported stolen out of Orem.
Two deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, speeding down state Route 224 toward Park City. Court papers indicate speeds reached 90 mph, and deputies attempted to spin out the sedan unsuccessfully.
“We had a deputy set up and deploy spike strips on [state Route] 224 — right near Canyons Resort Drive — did successfully spike the tires,” Talbot said.
When it was spiked, prosecutors say the stolen car braked “aggressively,” and a pursuing deputy collided with it.
With its tires deflating, the Alfa Romeo made it to Meadows Drive before it stopped, and deputies arrested the two occupants.
The driver, Brittney Iliganoatoo Toomata, 24, of Orem, is charged with possessing a stolen vehicle, a second-degree felony, as well as failing to respond to a traffic stop, a third-degree felony. Deputies say she was also in possession of a user amount of marijuana, which is a class B misdemeanor.
Toomata is being held without bail at the Summit County Jail, and prosecutors have asked a judge to keep her in custody pending a trial.
The Summit County Jail roster indicated both Toomata and her passenger were in custody as of midday May 27. The 22-year-old passenger has not been charged; bail is set at $1,250.
Talbot said the Orem Police Department returned the Alfa Romeo to its owner.
