Eighteen charges have been filed in the Summit County Third District Juvenile Court against a 17-year-old Park City High School student. On April 1st, Park City High School was evacuated as a result of a noxious chemical released near the drama room.
Emergency Responders and Haz Mat crews were called to Park City High School on the afternoon of April 1st a little before 2 pm with 14 students and one teacher complaining of nausea, headache, stomach cramps and difficulty breathing. The teacher was transported to the emergency room. The others were treated on school grounds. Four others had been exposed and had gone home only to call the school later complaining of the same symptoms.
A couple hours after the emergency teams arrived, school officials received a phone call from a student who took responsibility for the release of the chemical spray. That student now faces one allegation of criminal mischief which is a second-degree felony. Other allegations include 16 counts of assault with substantial risk of bodily injury which are class B misdemeanors and one count of disrupting a meeting-procession which is also a class B misdemeanor. Reportedly, the high school club, Turning Point USA had scheduled a speaker for that afternoon.
Park City School District officials and the Summit County Attorney’s office declined to comment on the case.
A Utah State Juvenile Court administrator says the 17-year-old student will be tried in a juvenile court.
