If you've ever stood in a lift line, dined at the Black Diamond Lodge or walked around The Park Silly Sunday Market, you might’ve heard Wyatt Pike singing and playing his guitar.
The Park City local has been playing gigs around the town for years and released a five song record last year titled Brand New Boy. Back in November he flew out to Ojai, CA to audition for American Idol.
“I went in with the mindset that I wanted to show them that I could sing, but also that I could play guitar, because that kind of goes hand in hand, at least for me,” Pike said. “And also, I wanted to tell a story and explain who I was.”
He said he grew up watching the show, and when the opportunity to audition came along...he couldn’t say no.
“I remember being in the living room, watching Philip Phillips come out with a marching band and thought it was incredible,” he said. “And that definitely sparked some guitar playing in my bedroom all night keeping my sister and my parents up.”
Like many things this past year, the pandemic changed how auditions work. Pike had to go through a series of zoom auditions. When he finally performed for the judges in-person, he picked an original song.
“So I actually went in with a song that I wrote that I released last year, it's called ‘Best for You,’” he said. “I wrote it about my sister and figured that was a great one to kind of share the story of who I was. I'm a writer and a singer and guitar player. And so I went in and played that as best I could. I don't want to reveal the results by accident...but it was awesome.”
Pike can’t share if he made it past the first audition until the episode airs. He said he should be on the show sometime in the next few weeks.
American Idol airs every Sunday night at 8/7c.
