Many who make the drive between Park City and the Heber Valley have likely noticed the increased activity at the planned Mayflower Mountain Resort site. Construction is moving quickly on the project with the first vertical construction happening as soon as the weather allows.
Wasatch County Manager Mike Davis reports that construction on the military hotel and conference center is slated to begin this spring. The structure will have over 170 rooms and a 60,000 square foot conference space. Davis says the building permit for the hotel will be ready to issue within a week or two, although that might be slightly altered depending on effects of the coronavirus.
“It will be the first hotel,” Davis explained. “I know, the developer has a couple of others planned. In addition to the hotel there’s some attached condo units to the hotel that were just recently approved, so that will be added on as well. So, they are proceeding quickly and a lot of plans if you drive by there, you see there is a lot of work going on just beyond the side of the proposed hotel. So, they're planning the whole area, and the idea is that the expansion of the ski resort and everything else will be happening at the same time. There will be a lot of work up there in the next several months.”
Another construction item in the area is the Jordanelle Parkway which will link the Mayflower Resort with 224 at the Browns Canyon Road’s intersection. The Parkway is slated to be completed this summer.
“Most of the work is done,” Davis said. “The paving is not done. A couple of the development that are adjacent to that have also been working on their infrastructure and roads. So, when the weather clears they will be finishing up theirs. So, we expect to see quite a bit of activity once the weather clears.”
UDOT will also be constructing two transportation portals underneath US 40 near Mayflower Mountain Resort which are scheduled to be completed within a year or two. An additional transportation related item is moving a parking area from the east side of US 40 to the west side, putting cars and skiers closer to the actual resort.
“There is a structured parking, but there's also open parking for several hundred spaces as well as the structured parking,” Davis continued. “We anticipate there will still be free parking to the public. We have not abandoning things on the east side completely because as we are working with our partners regionally on future transit issues, we’re going to have opportunity there. So some of that may take place on the east side as well as the west side. So there are still options available for the public there that we haven't fully worked through.”
Whether that parking is free or paid, Davis didn’t know.
The total assessed value of Wasatch County is about six billion dollars. Financial advisors on the project estimate the Mayflower Mountain could bring an additional value of three billion dollars to the county.
