Expect Delays For Those Driving To The Utah/BYU Game Thursday

University of Utah

BYU/Utah Fans Should Plan for Hour-long Delays on I-15 Thursday Evening.

Gameday traffic, commuters, and road construction expected to create major delays; consider using UTA FrontRunner and Utah Valley Express to get to the stadium

SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 28, 2019) – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises drivers to plan ahead for delays of up to an hour on southbound I-15 when traveling to the BYU versus Utah football game in Provo Thursday night. If possible, fans should consider leaving earlier in the afternoon to avoid the evening commute.

Several construction projects are currently underway on I-15, and drivers will notice shifted and narrow lanes in several locations including from Riverdale to Layton; from Salt Lake City to Draper; and in Lehi. To help traffic flow more smoothly after the game, the regularly scheduled overnight lane closures for the I-15 projects from Salt Lake City to Lehi will be suspended until at least one hour after the game ends.
Closer to the stadium, UDOT is reconstructing 500 West in Provo, and Provo City is rebuilding Bulldog Boulevard. Drivers should use Orem Center Street, University Parkway and University Avenue exits. Engineers will be monitoring conditions and adjusting signal timing to accommodate heavy traffic before kickoff and after the game.

Using UTA’s FrontRunner and Utah Valley Express are a good way to avoid traffic when traveling to and from the stadium. Utah Valley Express service continues after midnight, and UTA has added two FrontRunner trains that will depart Provo one hour after the game ends.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. For the latest information on traffic restrictions during construction, visit the UDOT Traffic website (udottraffic.utah.gov) or download the UDOT Traffic app for iPhone or Android. Drivers can also follow UDOT on social media including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
