Park City’s July Road Work Occurring at Night, Might Still Cause Traffic Delays

Park City Municipal

Noticing a lot of orange road cones and more traffic than usual in Park City lately? You’re not alone. The city is working on summer pavement repairs and sewer improvements this month.

In a seasonal climate like Utah, construction can really only take place during the summer months. That means delays in commute times and new traffic patterns throughout the state. Park City is no different as it began road and sewer improvement projects this week that are expected to be complete by the end of July.

The improvements include basic crack filling, bike path and road sealing, and more intensive resurfacing such as milling the top few inches of pavement and replacing it with fresh asphalt.

The complete resurfacing is only taking place on a select few roads where a smoother surface is needed for cyclists and drivers, said City Engineer John Robertson.

“Our public works department has hired a contractor to come in and do grinding of the pavement and then an overlay to replace the surface and provide a more rideable surface on various roads throughout town,” said Robertson.

Most of the extensive resurfacing is scheduled for this week. The last road, Rising Star Lane, will be complete by July 26th.

In addition to the city’s road projects, the Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District is working on several sewer pipeline improvements. Roads affected by that include Deer Valley Drive, Park Avenue, and Shortline Road.

Robertson added they are trying to keep hassles to a minimum.

“It can be a significant [traffic] impact at times, I should say,” he said. “Most of the work is occurring at night, so that’s a good thing that’s helping, but some of the traffic control does have to stay in place for the day.”

Park City Police had to coordinate with Robertson on Wednesday because the traffic pattern at the intersection of Deer Valley Drive and Park Avenue had changed and was causing confusion for motorists. Robertson said that lane shift will likely be the biggest problem during this month’s projects.
