Maintenance at the Heber Valley sewer ponds has created an awful smell in the area. The cause of the stench is work that occurs about twice every century.
The Heber Valley Special Service District sewage ponds are located just outside Midway City close to where the Provo River and Midway lane meet. Recently one of the holding ponds at the district was drained for repairs, emitting a terrible smell. In a written statement Midway Mayor Celeste Johnson says that the maintenance usually occurs once every 40 years, and the resulting smell and duration of the smell has been worse than the service district anticipated.
The scheduled work on the ponds has been completed and now the pond is being refilled with both water and oxygen. Adding oxygen to the pond will eventually neutralize the odor, but the district is unsure how many more days the smell will continue to permeate.
Mayor Johnson reports that elected members of the service district board are working to find solutions to prevent neighboring Midway from dealing with the issue in the future.
