The Snyderville Basin Recreation District is seeking public input in the form of a survey to inform how they plan for future projects and programs. Among items of interest for residents include ice rinks, new trails and a community pool.
The last community survey from the rec district went out in about 2012, now Snyderville Basin Recreation District Director Brian Hanton says that letters and emails have been sent out to residents in the community.
“There’s a random group that will receive letters in the mail or emails,” Hanton explained. “Last Tuesday they went out. There was a little glitch in the system on Friday, but we got that figured out. Everyone that received a letter I hope that you're able to fill out that survey. We just want to hear from you. We want to hear what you want. We have recreation, we have facilities, it's about trails, open space. A number of different questions regarding those different topics.”
One request that the district is hearing about is additional ice rinks.
Black Rock Mountain Resort is a new property north of the Jordanelle that will have three ice rinks. Hanton says that the rec district has been meeting with the resort property for the past three years about potentially using the ice.
“We’re kind of seeing what they're going to do,” Hant said. “We hope that they'll have some open time. It's only a mile away from the existing ice rink. So, if we can save the community dollars by not building another rank right there and utilize that facility for some of their programming it’s a win-win for both our organization and their facilities. We understand their facility is going to be more of a weekend tournament type of a venue. So, during the week we should have opportunities to have the figure skating, hockey, curling, depending on what times we’ll have available over there.”
Hanton says that they also have some trailheads that they’re looking to put in. Another item of interest is a community pool.
“That would be one at our Silver Creek Village area that might be a potential,” Hanton continued. “Again, that's why we're hoping to do this community survey. After that we’ll do a facility demand study and see where we fit with the population based on what facilities we have for population size and see what comes out with that. I mean there's a few options. I know in the survey Park City is looking to maybe expanding the MARC again and seeing what they can do there, if that pool fits there. Silver Creek Village is an option. Just seeing what else is out there. We recognize that a pool is definitely something that community would appreciate.”
Finally, Hanton says that the recently acquired Gilmor Property will offer a variety of recreational opportunities.
“Part of the administrative order of consent we had to put in some concept trails and that's already established of what we can do and that's been up agreed upon by the EPA,” Hanton explained. “That part is there. Depending on what the EPA comes back with, with the Triangle there might be more opportunities on that parcel to do some other things. We know it will be a year-round usage. We look forward to doing Nordic skiing out there, we know that the kite skiers like to use that area so we're going to have to engage in conversation with them and how that fits in to what they do. So, there's definitely a lot of potential out there recreation wise.”
