The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is indicating that vehicle burglaries and shoplifting certainly aren’t slowing down for the holiday season.
The Sheriff’s incident report said that five smash and grab burglaries on vehicles occurred on Friday the 20th between the late morning and early afternoon.
They occurred in varied locations including Smiths, the Olympic Park and Summit Park. Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright said soon afterward they got reports of similar incidents in Wasatch County.
A camera at Smiths captured some images of a female suspect.
“We have some video of a female suspect that used a credit card from one of the vehicle burglaries down in the Redstone area. There was also a report of cards being used at Smiths in Heber. There was a Smiths employee up here in Summit County who dealt with the suspect and noticed that she didn’t match the driver license that she provided and confiscated that license as well as the credit card and was able to turn that over.”
The female suspect was described as Caucasian, between 35 and 40. She was seen leaving in a light-colored SUV.
Lt. Wright said the incidents are a reminder that even when cars are locked, shopping items that can be seen inside provide an easy opportunity for thieves. He advised shoppers to put the items in the trunk or make a quick stop home and drop them there.
The day before, in a separate case, employees at an Outlet Mall clothing store reported that two females tried to steal items. They were recognized from a previous theft that occurred on Nov. 29th, Black Friday.
When the two women were prevented from stealing, they fled in a vehicle. Employees were able to get a license plate number. The driver was described as a woman in her 20’s; the passenger was in her 30’s and reportedly wearing a lot of glitter.
