Even with COVID-19 vaccination rates slowing down across the state, new cases have remained low.
As more Utahns get vaccinated there have been clear decreases in cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Around 13,500 Utahns have been vaccinated since Wednesday. Across the state vaccination sites and partners have administered more than 2.55 million total vaccines.
The Utah Department of Health announced 309 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, which is around 50 more cases than the state saw at the same time last week. Despite an increase in cases week over week, the seven-day rolling average of new cases is now 245 per day, down from last week’s average of 291.
Cases have remained low in the Wasatch Back. Summit County reported 2 new cases. The seven-day rolling average for new cases in the county is 1.4 per day. Summit is now in the low level of Utah’s COVID-19 transmission index.
Wasatch County reported no new cases. The seven-day average for new cases is 5 per day. The county is still in the low level of the COVID-19 index.
The Utah Department of Health reported two new deaths Thursday. To date, 2,294 Utahns have died due to COVID-19, including 13 from Summit County and 22 from Wasatch County.
At the governor’s weekly press conference, the Deputy Director of state department of health, Michelle Hoffman, said of the nearly 121,000 COVID-19 cases since January, 99.5% were unvaccinated people. She added there have also been almost 700 deaths since January, and 99.9% of them were unvaccinated.
"So the vaccines work," she said. "They're markedly reducing hospitalizations, and death, almost eliminating it, frankly. And the best way to continue to reduce that is through improvements to our vaccines in their coverage of the circulating variants."
Summit County has administered more than 52,000 total vaccines. And Wasatch has given out over 26,000 doses.
The Summit County Health Department has stopped administering first doses at its mass vaccination site at the Utah Film Studio. Gov. Spencer Cox said most mass vaccine sites around the state are starting to close.
"Those vaccination clinics were meant to get through 1000s and 1000s of people in a short amount of time," Cox said. "But we are transitioning now. We still have the same amount of vaccine available. We're just making it easier and closer to you. Most locations will let you now walk in with no appointment."
