A fight broke out Friday night at a Wasatch High School lacrosse game. Now the school district is looking into whether some of the players used racial slurs.
It was Senior Night at Wasatch High when the Wasps took on Highland High from Salt Lake City. A fight broke out on the field after Wasatch players allegedly used racial slurs.
Both schools are looking into the matter. Highland High School Principal Jeremy Chatterton said he hopes they can get to the bottom of what happened.
"Obviously, if students felt as though this is what they heard, then this is something that we would really address, and make sure that we put the proper channels in for them to be able to have the support that they would need," he said. "But right now we're really just in the preliminary investigative stages of what was going on."
The Black Lives Matter Utah Chapter posted a video of the fight on its Facebook page, and said it received civil rights complaints about the incident. Some said coaches were involved in the fight.
Chatterton wasn’t at the game. But he says, based on what he knows, the coaches were trying to separate the players.
Wasatch School District declined an interview with KPCW, but released a statement that said they expect athletes and staff to act as role models for other students.
The district also said they will continue to work with Highland High until they reach a resolution. And, they may take disciplinary action, but that depends on the outcome of the investigation.
