Fans watch outside Delta Center watch the live press conference announcing Utah Mammoth as the new name and branding identity of Utah's NHL franchise, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in Salt Lake City.

Mammoths roamed Utah’s glaciers almost 10,000 years ago and now the state is bringing the prehistoric creature back to the ice.

The Utah Hockey Club and Smith Entertainment Group announced its new name and mascot, the Utah Mammoth, this week after acquiring the name and rights in April last year.

The team said the name pays homage to the fossils found throughout the state, including around Park City.

The new name comes on the heels of the National Hockey League team’s inaugural season when they were temporarily dubbed the “Utah Hockey Club.”

Utah finished sixth in the Central Division and missed out on a wildcard spot in the playoffs by seven points.

Earlier this week, Utah drew the fourth overall pick for the 2025 NHL Draft. That is 10 spots higher than the team anticipated.

The New York Islanders won the first overall pick for the first time since 2009. The San Jose Sharks will pick second followed by the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 2025 NHL Draft starts June 27 in Los Angeles.
