The girls team took second in 2018 and finished fifth at nationals. A year later the team was No. 2 in Utah. Now the Wasps can add the state’s highest ranking to its list of achievements.
The Wasps 15s team bested the Provo Steelers 60-25 in the finals May 10. Wasatch led the game 35-12 at the half and added another 25 points before clock ran out. The win is the Wasps' first state title since the girls program began in 2015.
Wasatch shut out the West Valley Warriors 30-0 May 3 to make it into the finals.
With the state title, the girls 15s team received an invite to the 2026 15s national competition.
The Wasatch boys 15s team made it to the semifinals May 2 where they fell to the Salt Lake Valley Rhinos 36-22.
The two rugby teams will now shift focus to the fall season. The Wasatch boys team will look to defend its 2024 state title.
There are two primary forms of rugby: sevens and 15s. Rugby sevens is the same tournament-style of competition as the Olympics. The fast-paced game involves two seven-minute halves with seven players from each team on the field.
Rugby is not yet a sanctioned high school sport in Utah, for boys or girls. But, Wasatch High School Rugby Head Coach Patrick Whalen said the sport has been rising in popularity since the USA Women won bronze in the 2024 Olympics. More than 20 states have made girls high school rugby a sanctioned sport.
Whalen believes the Utah High School Activities Association will sanction girls sevens and boys 15s rugby in the next couple of years, leading to more college opportunities.
