Utah adopted the nation’s first law banning fluoride in drinking water during the 2025 legislative session and it goes into effect Wednesday.

HB81 prohibits fluoride from being added to any public water system in Utah.

Dentists say the natural mineral helps protect teeth and bones and is already found in water, but its levels differ in each community.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services said the law allows pharmacists to supply fluoride supplements to Utahns without a prescription from a dental or medical provider.

Experts say oral health, including teeth, gums, throat and the bones around your teeth, is crucial to overall well-being. Tooth decay and gum disease can cause other health problems or infections, and can make it difficult to speak, eat or smile.

Dental professionals recommend regular dental check-ups and teeth cleaning every six months to keep the mouth, teeth and gums healthy.

Dentists also recommend brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, flossing before bed and limiting sugary drinks and food will help prevent tooth decay.

Avoiding tobacco and nicotine use, including vaping, can reduce the risks of gum disease, oral infections and tooth loss.
