Memorial Day is meant to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving, but the Better Business Bureau says it’s also a time when scammers target service members.
Among the most common scams are high-priced military loans, veterans’ benefits buyout plans, fake rental properties, misleading car sales and expensive life insurance policies.
To avoid scams, the bureau says consumers should never wire transfer money to anyone they don’t know. It also recommends protecting computers by keeping personal information off of unfamiliar websites and not clicking links on unsolicited emails.
Service members should also put “active duty” alerts on their credit reports when deployed to minimize the risk of identity theft.
