An avalanche in a popular snowshoe and dog walking canyon this week is a reminder that avalanches have no boundaries.
-
With Park City Mountain Resort not scheduled to open until next week, and Deer Valley until next month, snow riders are headed into the back country to enjoy the new snow. But with one local avalanche already reported, those who can’t wait for the lifts to turn, need to know what they’re doing.
-
Conditions in the backcountry are still dangerous, especially on north and east and northwest facing slopes. These are the slopes on which snow from early October storms never melted and has since become very weak – and unable to sustain the new snow on top of this faceted layer. If you’re headed into the backcountry to enjoy the new snow that’s coming this week, be sure you know what you’re doing.
