Wasatch County School District addresses new immigration policy

The Wasatch County School District said in a letter to families Thursday, Jan. 23, it will continue to provide “a safe and welcoming environment to all students,” regardless of immigration status.

This comes on the heels of an announcement by the Trump administration earlier this week that spaces including schools, churches and hospitals are no longer protected from immigration enforcement.

It’s a reversal from the Biden administration’s guidelines prohibiting arrests by immigration agents in or near “protected areas,” mostly places where children gather or social services are offered.

The letter to families says the district does not collect or share information about students’ immigration status.

It also reminds families to ensure emergency contact information is up to date.

The district says counselors are available at every school to talk with students experiencing anxiety or fear about the changes to federal immigration policy.

The Park City School District and several Wasatch Front districts released similar statements Wednesday.

Wasatch School District families,

This week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have been granted clearance to enforce immigration laws in places previously considered off-limits, such as schools, churches, and hospitals. Wasatch School District recognizes that this recent change to federal immigration policy may have prompted questions or concerns. Please know that Wasatch School District:

  • Remains committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment to all students.
  • Will continue to follow laws guaranteeing that all children in the United States, regardless of their immigration status, have a right to a free and appropriate education.
  • Does not collect or share information about the immigration status of students.
  • Encourages parents and guardians to contact the Front Office staff at their child’s school to make sure their contact information and their student's emergency contact information is accurate and current. Emergency contacts can be family members OR a trusted adult designated by the guardian and can be updated by speaking with the secretary at the school.
  • Will have counselors and wellness staff at all our schools who are available if students experience any anxiety, stress, or fears in response to changes to federal immigration enforcement guidelines.

Please reach out to your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns.
