Park City Students Have Access To More Mental Health Services

Park City School District has staffed up the wellness program with counselors, interventionists and therapists to address the mental health needs of children in a wholistic way.

Park City School District Associate Superintendent of Wellness, Ben Belnap says he is pleased with the professionalism from his staff along with the new partnership with the University of Utah. The contract between Summit County Health Department and the University of Utah took effect September first. Through grant funding, the school district will be able to access those more advanced services as needed.

“They have taken over our school based mental health services as our provider. They have about eight therapists they are contracting with right now that they are sending in with our most extreme cases of those kids that need that extra boost of mental health support that maybe is beyond what we can help provide in the school.”

Belnap says this new arrangement will provide students and staff with crisis support if needed.

“Our teachers here in this district have the mind-set that they are more than just individuals who deliver instruction. They understand the importance of connection with our students. Through that connection they know our students. They learn so much about them to where they can identify those students who are struggling. And especially those students with depression and anxiety. The things you don’t necessarily see as behavioral outbursts in the classroom. Those are the students that often slip through the cracks in school.”

That’s Associate Superintendent of Wellness with the Park City School District, Ben Belnap.
