California Man Dies After Being Hit By Van In Park City

Park City Police

Park City Police Capt. Phil Kirk says a van traveling north on Empire Avenue hit 43-year-old Thomas Chauvel Thursday, just after 7 p.m. The incident happened near 1482 Empire Ave. Chauvel was walking in the road when the van struck him. A 23-year-old Salt Lake City man was driving the van. An ambulance transported Chauvel to the University of Utah Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Chauvel is from Corona Del Mar, Calif. Kirk says Chauvel’s family thanks the people who responded to him until emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

The incident is the third instance of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the past three weeks. On Jan. 23, Park City resident Janis Byler was critically injured when she was hit in the crosswalk on Park Avenue near Fresh Market, and another woman was hit the following day crossing Saddle View Way.

Kirk reports the incident remains under investigation. KPCW will provide updates to this story as more information is provided.
