Wasatch County Sees Larger Voters Turnout For 2020 Election Compared To 2016

Even during a pandemic, Wasatch County saw a better turnout for the 2020 presidential election than the one in 2016, according to Wasatch County Clerk Cal Griffiths.

“2016, we had a total of 15,000 voters,” Griffiths said. “And we had 75% turnout. And this year, we had 20,160 voters with 82% turnout so far. And we still have some provisionals. And 1059 absentee ballots, we need to count so we could end up upwards of 85 to 88% turnout, which is unbelievable.”

Even with the vast majority of the votes counted, he said official results won’t be released for another couple of weeks.

“We will be doing some counting throughout this week and maybe next week," he said. "Our canvas, which is when we do the final count and everything, will be done on November 17.”

Griffiths said the clerk’s office and residents in Wasatch county were able to adapt to the change in voting protocols.

“I think the thing that really impressed me the most is we did an all paper ballot. And usually we have touchscreens, people like the touchscreens, but this year was COVID. We went all paper ballots, it's a lot more labor intensive for the people here in the office,” he said. “So I think for the most part, the residents in Wasatch County, just were very supportive and responded exceptionally with what all they had to do for this election.”

Wasatch County will continue to update ballot results. You can find more information on local results onKPCW’s election page.
