Summit County’s Only Open DMV Office In Quarantine Due To COVID-19 Outbreak

Park City’s DMV office closed Tuesday, and the Coalville and Kamas locations have been closed since the start of the pandemic — leaving Summit County residents without an open DMV.

The quarantine comes after one of four employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Summit County Treasurer Corrie Forsling, whose department handles DMV operations, said the office will not be able to operate remotely while the staff is quarantining.

“So the way that the DMV works is, it is a state function,” Forsling said. “So all of the computers, all of the hardware, the software, the equipment is all supplied by the state. And it only operates and functions in the location inside the office.”

The Heber DMV is only open to Wasatch County residents, further complicating the matters of finding an open DMV. Forsling says people can still drive down to the Salt Lake City office or call the state DMV number.

There’s a chance law enforcement will be more lenient with expired registration because of the pandemic.

“I will say my understanding is that and I'm not going to speak for the sheriff's office, but there is some leniency on going past your registration date,” she said. “But we try to reassure people, it's not a panic if you can't renew in the month that your registration expires.”

The office is expected to reopen next Wednesday, Nov. 25.
