A new Wasatch County COVID-19 death was reported by the Utah Department of Health Thursday along with over 4,500 new statewide cases.
The Wasatch County death was reported as a woman over the age of 85, who was hospitalized at the time of her death. Wasatch County’s total COVID-19 death toll since the start of the pandemic is now 16.
28 other COVID-19 deaths were reported by the Health Department on Thursday, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,359. None of the deaths reported on Thursday were from Summit County, but included an Iron County woman who was between the ages of 25 and 44 and not hospitalized at the time of her death.
Statewide, the Health Department reported 4,597 new positive cases of the virus and Summit County set a new record of positive cases in a day with 76. The county’s previous record for cases in a day was 62 from December 30th. Wasatch County reported 43 new cases.
Summit County has seen an alarming rise in cases since mid-December.
The statewide rolling seven-day average of positive tests sits at 2,952 per day and the seven-day average for positive laboratory tests is 32.71%, a new record high. Both metrics have been steadily increasing across the state since December 27th, when the seven-day average of positive cases was just 1,971.
537 people statewide are currently hospitalized with the disease and COVID-19 referral center ICU beds are now 87.4% occupied.
As of Thursday, 68,030 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Utah.
