Thursday COVID-19 Update: As Cases Continue to Decline, Wasatch County Sees Another COVID-19 Death

Despite the steady decrease in new COVID-19 cases throughout the state, Wasatch County reported another COVID-19 death Thursday.

The Wasatch County man who died was between 45-64 years old. He was not hospitalized at the time of his death. He was one of five deaths reported by the state Department of Health. To date, 2,041 Utahns have died due to COVID-19, including 11 from Summit County and 21 from Wasatch County.

The department announced 560 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, which is about 90 less cases than the state saw at the same time last week.

During his monthly press conference, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said this week cases are continuing to decline, which is a relief when last week it looked like new cases were leveling out week over week.

"We did see a plateau last week, I think cases only fell about 3%, which isn't nothing," Cox said. "That's good news, they still fell. But this week, we're seeing a bigger decline than we did last week."

He says the state’s 7-day rolling average has continued to decline. The average is now 484 cases per day, the lowest it’s been since mid-September.

On average about 4% of “tests over tests” are coming back positive, while average percent positivity for “people over people” is around 8%.

There were 7,526 people tested for the first time, with 16,975 total tests administered.

In the Wasatch Back, Summit County reported 17 new cases, which is nearly twice as many cases compared to last Thursday. Wasatch County reported eight new cases - up compared to last Thursday when the county saw seven.

The department also reported 25 new hospitalizations. There are 189 people in the hospital for COVID-19, in the state. Around 75% of all referral center ICU beds are in use.

There were 25,312 people vaccinated for COVID-19 since Wednesday, bringing the total number to 1,080,039 doses administered.
