United States' Mikaela Shiffrin speeds down the course during a women's World Cup slalom, in Courchevel, France, Thursday Jan. 30, 2025.

U.S. alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin has returned to World Cup competition after an injury in November that knocked her out of racing.

At her first race in two months, Shiffrin finished 10th in the slalom in Courchevel, France Thursday.

Historically, Shiffrin has performed well at the resort in the French Alps; she’s won seven events across four disciplines, and three World Championship medals on the venue’s courses.

The 29-year-old is one win away from a 100th career World Cup victory but, says for now, she’s taking it slow and “not throwing in too much into the fire at once.”

On Nov. 30 Shiffrin crashed during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, suffering a deep puncture to her side that caused severe trauma to her oblique muscles.

The cause of the puncture remains a mystery.

The Associated Press reports Shiffrin's journey back to the start gate included preventative surgery to ward off an infection inside a wound that penetrated through three layers of muscle. In addition, she’s done hours of arduous rehabilitation and has had to work to feel comfortable weaving through a course.

The next women’s World Cup race is Feb. 21 in Italy.
