At her first race in two months, Shiffrin finished 10th in the slalom in Courchevel, France Thursday.
Historically, Shiffrin has performed well at the resort in the French Alps; she’s won seven events across four disciplines, and three World Championship medals on the venue’s courses.
The 29-year-old is one win away from a 100th career World Cup victory but, says for now, she’s taking it slow and “not throwing in too much into the fire at once.”
On Nov. 30 Shiffrin crashed during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, suffering a deep puncture to her side that caused severe trauma to her oblique muscles.
The cause of the puncture remains a mystery.
The Associated Press reports Shiffrin's journey back to the start gate included preventative surgery to ward off an infection inside a wound that penetrated through three layers of muscle. In addition, she’s done hours of arduous rehabilitation and has had to work to feel comfortable weaving through a course.
The next women’s World Cup race is Feb. 21 in Italy.
