Rep. Brian King (D-UT) is the Utah Democratic party nominee for Utah Governor.

The Utah Democratic Party has chosen former House minority leader and gubernatorial candidate Brian King as its next chairman.

A record 1,450 delegates from across the state selected a new slate of leaders during the party’s 2025 Organizing Convention in Ogden Saturday.

King served as a state house representative for District 23 for 16 years, representing a portion of Summit County.

“This is a new era and this is our moment,” King said. “As Chair, I’m ready to lead the charge to hold out-of-touch Republicans accountable, to connect with voters across the state and political spectrum, and to flip seats from the top of the ballot to the bottom.”

Susan Merrill is the new vice chair, Brad Dickter will serve as secretary and Catherine Voutaz is treasurer.

The Democratic Party also adopted a new platform at the organizing convention. It plans to fight for policies that “ensure no one is denied access to basic human services, promotes fairness and equity, and invests in thriving communities built on evidence, science, and sustainable stewardship.”

The Utah GOP Organizing Convention was May 17 where delegates elected Rob Axson to a second term as chair.
