Fiesta Days Celebration Adapting To Kamas Fire Restrictions

The annual Fiesta Days celebration is coming up this weekend in Kamas. At the same time, the city has implemented restrictions on fireworks, fires and smoking.

At Kamas City Council’s last meeting, on July 10th, the council authorized the mayor to issue a Fire Restriction Order, prohibiting personal use of fireworks, tracer ammunition or other pyrotechnics.

The order also forbids open fires of any kind, except designated facilities in improved campgrounds, picnic areas, or homesites with running water. Smoking is disallowed except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation area, or while stopped in an area that’s paved or free from dry vegetation.

The order also forbids welding, grinding, or operating a chainsaw or ATV without a working spark arrestor.

The order still allows for a professional firework show during the Fiesta days, but at last week’s meeting, Mayor Matt McCormick said even that will be subject to weather conditions at the time.

He said the city decided about the order after a meeting on the 9th of July.

“A concern was brought up from the fire marshal, about fireworks during our celebration. This resolution would allow us to shoot fireworks at our celebration, and not private fireworks. But, I think that (…) we may cancel our fireworks depending on the situation when the time comes.” Mayor McCormick said, “We certainly do not want to create any unsafe situations.”

The city’s proclamation is similar to a restriction order it has already issued on July 3rd, following a directive from the State Fire Marshal.

The Fiesta Days schedule includes a rodeo on Thursday the 19th, Bull Wars and a parade on Friday the 20th, and the demolition derby on Saturday the 21st.
