Summit County is ready to begin vaccinating young children as soon possible. Pre-registration began last week, and while the timeline for availability is fluid, health officials expect to receive vaccine doses for children sometime in November.
Saying that COVID was the eighth-highest killer of kids in this age group over the past year, Centers for Disease Control officials advised the federal food and drug administration this week to approve the vaccine for children. An estimated 28 million children would be eligible for the shots with FDA approval.
Summit County Council chairman Glenn Wright said Thursday that vaccines will roll out soon.
“Vaccines are coming in for the five to 11-year-olds fairly soon,” Wright said. “The county health department is organized and ready to activate that as soon as they get the final approval and they see the vaccines appearing in their refrigerators.”

For adults, booster shots are available for everyone over age 65 who has completed their initial round of vaccines at least 6 months ago, as well as anyone over 18 who lives in a long-term care setting, has an underlying medical condition, or who works or lives in a high-risk setting.
