The Forest Service announced the Utah Department of Transportation officially locked the gates Dec. 5, 2023, for the winter.

The scenic byway through the Uinta Mountains is only open to over-snow vehicles, like snowmobiles.

The Utah Department of Transportation initially planned to close Mirror Lake Highway Nov. 30. Dec. 5, the U.S. Forest Service said it was official.

The highway running between Kamas and the Wyoming border is now only open to snowmobiles and other over-snow vehicles.

Guardsman Pass already closed fully, although UDOT's seasonal roads website does not reflect this as of Dec. 6. It is not possible to travel between Park City and Midway via Guardsman anymore.

Summit County plans to close another scenic cut-through, East Canyon Road, Dec. 8. It will be closed to the public until April 30.

UDOT doesn't announce when it will reopen its seasonal roads in advance because it depends on the weather. Click here for the full list of UDOT's seasonal roads, including which are currently open.
