Search and Rescue teams evacuated a man by helicopter from rural Wasatch County.
Wasatch County Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue teams evacuated a man by helicopter from rural Wasatch County on March 31, 2024.

A missing skier was found dead near Hoyt Peak on Saturday, March 8.

The Summit County Sheriff's office said the man was reported missing on Friday, March 7 around 5 p.m. He was believed to have been skiing alone in the backcountry near Hoyt Peak, northeast of Kamas.

Summit County Search and Rescue began a search of the area the same day. Crews found an area where an avalanche had recently occurred, but Search and Rescue commanders called off the search late Friday night due to hazardous and ineffective searching conditions.

The sheriff's office reports search efforts resumed early Saturday morning. Additional resources were called in to aid with avalanche mitigation. Crews from the Utah Avalanche Center, Park City Mountain Snow Experts, the Park City Mountain RECCO team, the Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau and the Wasatch Backcountry Rescue Team aided in the search Saturday morning.

Around 11 a.m. on Saturday crews found the overdue skier and determined he had been caught and buried in the avalanche.

The man has since been identified as 51-year-old Micheal Janulaitis from Marion, Utah.

This report was updated Sunday morning to identify the skier.
