The recreation district said a 24-foot soccer goal was somehow taken from Trailside East Park at 5:23 p.m. during full daylight.
The metal goal is worth upwards of $2,000, according to Summit County sheriff’s spokesperson Skyler Talbot.
“I don't know if this is along the lines of a prank, or if someone just, you know, really needed a full-size soccer goal,” Talbot said. “If we're able to identify who did it, it would be a felony-level offense.”
Thefts ranging in value from $1,500 to $5,000 are third-degree felonies in Utah punishable by up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
Basin Rec rangers say there is surveillance footage of the goal moving across the field. It shows about four people involved, but the quality is poor.
“It looks like they may have been disassembling the goal and walking back and forth numerous times to the east side of the field,” ranger Aaron Williams wrote in an email, saying it took about 40 minutes. “Based on this, I suspect they may have driven a truck down the Back-to-School trail and parked behind the field.”
