Zegarra, born and raised in Peru, moved to Park City in 2009. He became a U.S. citizen in 2017 and has spent the last nine years working for the Park City Community Foundation.
Zegarra's current role as the vice president of impact involves managing grants and other initiatives, including the foundation’s recreation and zero-food waste programs.
The Park City Chamber and Wasatch Immigration Project board member made the campaign announcement during the Park City Noon Rotary Club’s meeting Tuesday.
“I think we live in an amazing community and I see an opportunity for us to continue to set the table, to bring different stakeholders, make sure everyone is heard in the process, and move projects forward,” Zegarra told KPCW.
Zegarra said his campaign will focus on several challenges ahead.
“I think about the Olympics and the role they’re going to play and how it may impact our transit and transportation, making sure that our community feels alleviated from tourism traffic and it continues to be the special community we all love,” he said. “I’m also interested in bringing solutions to the urgent need of housing, workforce housing specifically.”
He said he also wants to address sustainability issues, including open space, wildfire mitigation and water.
“I am looking at the collective wisdom of our community – seniors, young families – to help me continue to develop these ideas as to what will be important for our community for the next 10, 20 and 30 years,” Zegarra said.
Zegarra is the third person to announce a run for Park City Council, along with incumbents Tana Toly and Jeremy Rubell, whose terms expire after this year.
Parkites will elect a mayor and two city councilmembers on Nov. 4. A primary election will be triggered Aug. 12 if five or more residents run for city council.
As of Tuesday, Park City Councilmember Ryan Dickey is the only person who has announced a mayoral run. If he is not elected mayor, Dickey will remain on the council until his term ends in 2027.
Candidates can file to run in Park City from June 2 to June 6.
