300,000 Utah Women Are Eligible To Vote But Aren't Registered

Voterise.org

An initiative has begun to register thousands more Utah women to vote in time for the 2020 presidential election. The non-partisan groups Voterise and the Utah League of Women Voters and others have joined forces to launch the program.

The 2020 Challenge is a woman to woman voter registration initiative. Voterise and the Utah League of Women Voters plan to recruit 1000 ambassadors to be trained in voter registration techniques.

Co-founder of Voterise, Elsa Garry says they want to generate 20,000 new women voters in the state.

“Both 2016 and 2018, the US census voting data showed there were approximately 300,000 women in the state of Utah who were eligible but not registered to vote.”

The Utah League of Women Voters representative, Jill Lesh says their mission is to encourage everyone to participate in government. Park City has 30 Voterise ambassadors already in place with half of them holding membership in the Utah League of Women Voters. They have 10 additional group partners such as Mormon Women for Ethical Government, Voto Latino and the Utah Pride Center.

They’re providing training for the ambassadors which includes materials needed to register voters but also techniques for bringing non-registered voters onto the rolls.

They’re focusing on women because 2020 is the hundred- year celebration of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution giving women the right to vote.

“2020 will be the 150th anniversary of the first vote by women in Utah which was also the first vote by women in the United States.”

Ambassador Training will be at the Christian Center of Park City on June 29th from 10AM to noon. For those interested in the training, go to the Voterise (with an S) Facebook page to register.
