The Park City Board of Education discussed future school calendar guidelines after receiving an update on the district calendar survey. With 1100 respondents weighing in, school administration has been given clear direction.
The final calendar won’t be approved until the August 20th board meeting. However, teachers, students and parents seem to be on the same page when it comes to the school schedule. The feedback shows most want a two-week long winter holiday break, a full week around President’s Day and a spring break in early April. Board member, Anne Peters questioned if the spring break should coincide with resort closing dates so parents who work in the ski industry can join their kids on break. This year the resorts closed the Sunday before the Spring Break began.
Park City School District Superintendent, Jill Gildea says the 2019/2021 calendar is approved and won’t change at this point. The 2020 graduation is scheduled for May 29th and the last day of school is June 2nd.
“19/20, next year’s calendar was adopted before the survey. The survey really impacts the 20/21 calendar. We did not make any changes to it. As of 20/21, we will make sure we always have the kids graduating last day or day after last day. Whatever the Friday becomes.”
The school board and district administration have talked about changing start times for at least five years. At one point, Treasure Mountain Junior High and the Park City High School were in line to change in the 2019/2020 school year. According to Gildea, the survey addressed the issue and she says it appears the community does not want to impose later start times. She says the morning parent release gives the needed flexibility for those kids who need more sleep.
“Calendar survey had multiple things besides just dates, including that preference from students, parents, staff. There does not seem to be a great deal of support in that particular instrument. Again, there’s research, there’s research study that talks about start time. What I find our families here do, via parent release, you know, the kids can really establish when they’re starting school.”
