UPDATED Thursday Evening:

An 11-year-old boy from the Kamas Valley died of a gunshot wound to his chest Wednesday evening.

Shortly before 6:00 pm on Wednesday Summit County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residence off SR 248 Near Kamas. Medical personnel attempted to provide live saving measures, but the boy died of his injuries.

The department now has more details on the incident. The boy and his brother were outside shooting a BB gun with their mother present. At some point the boys went inside the home and accessed a hand gun from inside the home. Shortly after the mother heard screaming coming from inside the home, when she entered she found one of the boys had a gunshot wound.

The family released a statement thanking the community for their outpouring of support and said they plan to announce arrangements to celebrate their son in the coming days.
