Pursuit of a stolen car resulted in the crash that killed one person and left another in critical condition Wednesday morning. The car had been stolen from a parking lot in Hideout.
An hour after the car was reported stolen, a Midway resident called the Wasatch County Sheriff to report someone trying to break into another vehicle. The caller said the person trying to break in got into a black car and left. That car matched the description of the stolen car.
About 20 minutes later, a Wasatch County deputy located the car on SR 113 and attempted to stop it. The driver did not pull over, and the deputy pursued it through Midway and onto U.S. 40, at times exceeding 95 miles per hour.
On 40, a Highway Patrol trooper used spikes to deflate the car's tires when it drove over them. The car continued, and a few miles later a Summit County used an additional tire-deflating device on the car's tires. At that point, the car swerved, lost control and rolled over on US 40 near mile marker 2 in Silver Summit.
A woman who was a passenger died at the scene and a man, who was driving, was transported by helicopter to a trauma center in Salt Lake City in critical condition.
Park City Fire District Battalion Chief Darren Nelson said the two occupants of the car being chased by law enforcement were ejected from their car when it rolled over. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures on the victim but were unsuccessful.
A detour around that area and a later accident on 248 near Richardson Flat road also are currently slowing things down. According to UDOT updates, only one lane is currently open on northbound 40. It's expected to be cleared by about 4 p.m.
Traffic is still significantly backed up on northbound 40 as agencies that didn’t participate in the chase are on scene conducting what’s called an officer involved critical incident investigation. The Utah Attorney General’s Office, West Valley Police Department and Park City Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
Highway Patrol public information officer Cameron Roden said the mid-morning crash involved law enforcement from Summit and Wasatch Counties as well as Utah Highway Patrol officers, who laid road spikes to stop the fleeing car.
Sgt Roden confirmed that an agency that wasn’t involved in the chase earlier will be performing an officer-involved critical incident investigation.
