Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein, an orthopedic surgeon at Duke University, discusses her new book, "The Complete Bone and Joint Health Plan," co-authored with dietitian Sydney Nitzorski.
The book offers a holistic approach to preventing and treating osteoporosis and arthritis, emphasizing an anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, and supplements. One in four adults has some form of arthritis, and osteoporosis-related fractures affect one in two women over fifty. Yet, for all the noise online, very few resources bring together the full picture of how to prevent and treat these conditions through everyday choices.
Dr. Wittstein discusses the importance of vitamin D supplementation, the role of menopausal hormone therapy in maintaining bone density and the benefits of strength training and impact exercises for bone health. The discussion also highlights the significance of early bone density screening and the role of diet and spices in joint health.
