A medical helicopter responds to the Thousand Peaks Ranch area of the Uinta Mountains, up Weber Canyon from Oakley, Jan. 20, 2025. A woman was found unresponsive near her snowmobile and flown to the University of Utah Medical Center.

The events leading to her death are still unclear. A child riding with her was not hurt, authorities say.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Skyler Talbot said deputies, rescuers and emergency medical staff responded to the Thousand Peaks Ranch area shortly after 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

“A group of snowmobilers was recreating in that area when they noticed that one of the members in their party was missing,” Talbot said.

It was a woman in her mid-30s, Talbot said, who was found unresponsive near her snowmobile off the designated path of the group’s guided tour.

CPR was in progress when first responders arrived. The woman was flown to the University of Utah Medical Center where she died.

Talbot said the events leading to her death are under investigation.

Utah's Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

“It was not immediately clear if this individual suffered a medical emergency that then caused the snowmobile to leave the path, or if the snowmobile malfunctioned caused this person's injuries,” he said.

An initial investigation has ruled out an avalanche or intoxication as contributing factors, he said.

Talbot said a child riding with the woman was found near the snowmobile unharmed.
