Summit County prosecutors charged Anh Duy Pham with attempted murder May 8 for hitting a woman walking in the Sun Peak neighborhood with his car on March 5, 2024. She survived the incident but was bruised and had a cut on her head.
Court records show Pham is also charged with nine counts of attempted murder in six similar hit-and-runs across the Salt Lake Valley.
All of the 10 attempted murder charges are first-degree felonies. Each carries a maximum possible prison term of life in prison.
Authorities believe he had been targeting women in crosswalks and along roads at random with his white 1999 Toyota Avalon from August 2023 to March 2024.
Court papers in the Summit County case say sheriff’s deputies used license plate readers and witness testimony to confirm the same vehicle hit the woman at the intersection of Sun Peak Drive and Bear Hollow Drive.
One witness told investigators he saw the Avalon leaving the area quickly around the time of the incident. The witness was waiting to turn right from Bear Hollow onto state Route 224, and the Avalon passed him on the left to take the right “without stopping or looking.”
Pham was arrested in March 2024 and is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail. No trial date has been set. A no-bail warrant was also issued May 9 by 3rd District Judge Richard Mrazik in the Summit County case.
The new charging documents state Summit County detectives reviewed Pham’s internet search history from February to March 2024, which included “homeless shelters for young women in utah,” “mass shooting,” “Utah hookers,” “ted bundy,” “the zodiac.killer,” “america’s serial killers” and “murda.”
Pham’s phone data also showed it was in the Sunpeak area when the hit-and-run happened last March, investigators say.
An initial court appearance at the Silver Summit Justice Center hasn’t been scheduled.
