Summit County Democrats

Despite COVID event cancellations, it’s election season and politics takes no vacation.  The Summit County Democrats will hold a virtual county convention with delegates making their selections on Thursday. As we’ve reported, the Wasatch and Summit County Republican parties, along with the Wasatch Democratic party cancelled county conventions this year and extended their 2018 delegates to serve another two years until 2022.

The campaign window for the four Summit County democratic candidates starts Wednesday and could end on April 2 with the county convention. In Tuesday’s caucus, 82 precinct delegates were elected and instead of a general election, they could decide who wins at the county convention.

On today’s program, Utah State Representative Tim Quinn (R-HD54) talks about his decision to not run for re-election in November. American Red Cross Blood Services External Communications Manager Cynthia De la Torre talks about the need for blood donations and how they’re collecting blood during the COVID-19 pandemic and Summit County Democratic Party Chair Meredith Reed has details about the outcome of the virtual caucus held Tuesday.






During Super Tuesday the state of Utah selected President Donald Trump as their choice for the Republican primary nomination. In the Democratic race Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won the state and Wasatch County, but former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg was the winner in Summit County.

In the Democratic race Senator Bernie Sanders won the state’s delegates with 34% of the popular vote. Sanders was followed by former Vice President Joe Biden who captured 17% of Utah’s popular vote, and former mayor Mike Bloomberg with 16%.

Summit County Democratic Party

The Summit County Democratic Party recently elected a new chairwoman and delegates nominated a replacement for County Assessor

At their convention held earlier in May, the county Democrats elected Meredith Reed to succeed Cheryl Butler as chairwoman of the party.

Reed is an Air Force veteran, Park City realtor and KPCW DJ. She was also the campaign manager last year for Eileen Gallagher, who ran to represent Utah’s Senate District 26, which ranges from Vernal to a substantial portion of Summit County.

  Last Friday Congressman Rob Bishop, from Utah’s first congressional district, held a town hall meeting that drew hundreds to the Layton Christian Academy.  Some attendees were from Summit County, driving 65 miles to participate.  Carolyn Murray has this:

The Summit County Democratic Party met Saturday and delegates decided they will not have a primary for the one inner-party contest they were considering.  They chose Doug Clyde to run for County Council Seat B, giving him 66 percent of the vote over the other contender, Sean Wharton.  KPCW's Rick Brough has more:
