Veterans in the county who served as active-duty members of the military are eligible to have their names added to Memorial Hill in Midway.
The veterans must have been county residents when they joined the military or were deployed, then lived in Wasatch County for at least 10 years after their military service. Veterans who have been awarded Purple Hearts and who have lived in the county for any length of time are also eligible.
The county council voted Jan. 22 to change the policy to add names annually. County manager Dustin Grabau said it’s too expensive to add names one at a time.
“The new additions that we’ll be making will make it much easier to add these smaller numbers,” he said. “We’ve been accumulating groups of names, so that we could make these changes in a larger section.”
This year, the deadline to submit names to be added is March 31. In subsequent years, the deadline for review will be in January, and the names will be added in time for Memorial Day.
The Memorial Hill committee, made up of county staff, reviews each application. There’s no fee for the veterans or their families to add a name to the monument.
