The South Summit School Board has hired an Interim Superintendent who will step in for departing Superintendent Shad Sorenson who plans to leave at the end of December.
The school board voted unanimously to hire Dr. Steve Hirase as the Interim Superintendent. He will take over the leadership of the South Summit School district beginning the first of the year. Superintendent Shad Sorenson submitted his resignation to the Board of Education in October. He served as the Superintendent since 2014 and now plans to take a position with another school district.
Hirase will serve through the spring semester and help in the hiring of a permanent Superintendent. They hope to have the job filled permanently by July 1.
Hirase’s experience began with the Jordan Valley School district in Midvale. He has experience as the principal of the Utah State Prison school. Most of his 38-year career has been with the Murray City School District. His most recent position was the Superintendent of Schools. The district currently has 11 schools and almost 6,500 students K-12.
In a statement, Hirase says he is looking forward to being part of a small community like the South Summit School District. And he recognizes the important role each staff member plays in the operation of the district. He says he looks forward to spending time in the schools and getting to know the staff.
