Holiday Bonus: Anonymous Donor Gives $6,000 To Summit County Sheriff's Office

Summit County Sheriff's Office

The staff of the Summit County Sherriff’s Office all received a nice holiday bonus – that wasn’t funded with taxpayer dollars.

Last week, a cardboard box filled with 120 envelopes each containing $50 was dropped off at the Summit County Sheriff’s Office with instructions to give each staff member one of them Before the deputy could ask for their name – they were gone.

“I mean literally it was, it was, here you go,” Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said. “The chief deputy asked what this for the individuals is explained what was for before they could before he could get a name. They said thank you and have a good day and they left.”

With plenty of cameras on-site and investigators on staff, it wouldn’t be difficult to find out who the generous benefactors are. But Sheriff Martinez says he wants to honor their request to be anonymous.

“This is this is the season of giving without having any expectations associated with it.” Martinez said. “So I think in that vein, we would honor that -- that we would not go to seek out who they are.”

If the couple does become known to him, he says he will take the opportunity to thank them in person.

The gesture he says is especially meaningful, given that law enforcement has been under a microscope this year.

“These individuals, I believe truly recognize the good that we're doing here in Summit County -- the community outreach, the holistic approach to law enforcement and just wanted to say thank you,” he said. “So, for me, it was an affirmation that we as a sheriff's office are fulfilling the goals of this community and really working with them, not against them. And that somebody recognizes that you know that we have a first-class sheriff's office in some county where he wanted to take the time to say thank you.”

Staff members have been emailed to come to pick up their envelopes between now and Wednesday. There are a handful of envelopes that will be left over because there aren’t 120 employees. Martinez says the additional funds will be used for a department party next summer – when it’s safe to do so.
